What is Bacteriostatic Water?

Bacteriostatic Water (BAC Water) is sterile water for injection containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a preservative. The benzyl alcohol inhibits the growth of most bacteria, allowing the solution to be used multiple times from the same vial over an extended period — typically up to 28 days after first use. It is the standard diluent used in research settings for reconstituting lyophilised (freeze-dried) peptides.

Why BAC Water and Not Regular Water?

Using the correct diluent is critical to both the stability and sterility of your reconstituted peptide. Here’s why BAC Water is the preferred choice:

  • Bacteriostatic Protection: The 0.9% benzyl alcohol content prevents microbial contamination between uses, making it safe for multi-dose vials.
  • Peptide Stability: BAC Water maintains an appropriate pH environment that supports peptide integrity over time.
  • Extended Shelf Life: Reconstituted peptides in BAC Water remain stable for up to 28–30 days when refrigerated, compared to significantly shorter windows with plain sterile water.
  • Sterility: Produced under strict pharmaceutical manufacturing standards, BAC Water ensures no introduction of contaminants during reconstitution.

Do not use: tap water, distilled water, or saline (sodium chloride solution) as substitutes — these can degrade peptides, alter pH, or introduce contamination.

Step-by-Step Reconstitution Guide

  1. Gather your materials: Lyophilised peptide vial, BAC Water vial, insulin syringe, alcohol swabs.
  2. Swab both vial tops with an alcohol swab and allow to air dry for 30 seconds.
  3. Draw your BAC Water: Using the insulin syringe, draw the desired volume of BAC Water (see dosing calculations below).
  4. Inject slowly: Insert the needle into the peptide vial and inject the BAC Water slowly down the side of the vial — do not aim directly at the lyophilised powder, as this can degrade the peptide.
  5. Do not shake: Gently swirl or roll the vial until the powder is fully dissolved. Shaking can damage the peptide structure.
  6. Label and store: Label the vial with the date of reconstitution and store refrigerated (2–8°C). Do not freeze reconstituted peptides.

Calculating Your Concentration

The volume of BAC Water you add determines the concentration of your reconstituted peptide. Use this formula:

Concentration (mcg/ml or mg/ml) = Total peptide amount ÷ Volume of BAC Water added

Reconstitution Examples

  • BPC-157 (5 mg vial): Add 2 ml BAC Water → 2,500 mcg/ml concentration. For a 250 mcg dose, draw 0.1 ml.
  • TB-500 (10 mg vial): Add 1 ml BAC Water → 10 mg/ml concentration. For a 2 mg dose, draw 0.2 ml.
  • GHK-Cu (5 mg vial): Add 3 ml BAC Water → 16.67 mg/ml concentration. For a 1 mg dose, draw 0.06 ml.
  • Tirzepatide (30 mg vial): Add 2 ml BAC Water → 15 mg/ml concentration. For a 7.5 mg dose, draw .5 ml.
  • Retatrutide (10 mg vial): Add 2 ml BAC Water → 5 mg/ml concentration. For a 1 mg dose, draw .2 ml.

Storage Guidelines

  • Unreconstituted lyophilised peptides: store at −20°C (freezer), away from light and moisture.
  • Reconstituted peptides in BAC Water: store at 2–8°C (refrigerator). Do not freeze. Use within 28–30 days.
  • BAC Water vials: store at room temperature prior to use. Once opened, store refrigerated.
